Hyena Eating Other Hyena
Spotted Hyenas are eating a younger hyena from another clan. The two hyena clans clashed in the early hours of the morning and the western clan caught one of the younger members of the eastern clan and started to eat it headfirst whilst still alive! Cannibalism is not uncommon in hyena society where nothing goes to waste! Hyenas can easily be turned into cannibals. Other hyenas have been observed attacking and eating them, especially young ones. Hyenas are one of the few animals capable of devouring the entire carcass, including the bones.
This could explain why they are associated with binge eating, dirt, and, in extreme cases, cowardice. This hyena is attempting to defeat her opponent by dragging her out of a mud pit. Hyenas are fascinating animals that continue to baffle us with their behavior. In this case, wildlife enthusiasts found several hyenas casually feeding on the entrails of another, still-alive hyena! I am not sure what caused the original injury to the unlucky hyena, or why they didn't bother killing it first. Onlookers watched for over an hour and left while the hyena was still alive. When they came back the next day, there was no sign of it at all.
Male Polar Bear Eats Cub
Polar bear cannibalism is not an uncommon occurrence, but it is rarely witnessed by humans. It's possible that this is the first time it's been captured on video in such detail. During an Arctic expedition, a film crew and passengers witnessed a male polar bear hunting and eating a polar bear cub, despite the cub's mother's efforts to protect it. According to experts, this cannibalistic behavior may become more common as the ice melts, making it more difficult for bears to reach their usual food sources. During a photography expedition to Svalbard, Norway, a crew of wildlife specialists came across a large male polar bear that had killed a small polar bear cub! Infanticide is a cannibalistic behavior that is mentioned in almost every book about polar bears but is almost never documented.
This was a first for this polar bear expert in his 20-plus years of working in the Arctic. The female, who is also the cub's mother, even came down to feed herself on the ice floe! The female bear was a satellite-tagged bear that was part of a research project conducted by the Norwegian Polar Institute. The scientist later informed the expedition members that the female was 14 years old and had only one cub that year. The cub was also a female, weighing 9 kg when scientists tagged her. It's a shame she didn't make it. This polar bear mom saves her cubs when a male comes climbing up a hill to snatch them. She creates a tiny avalanche, making the male polar slide down the mountain against his will, and saves the cubs from what was an imminent attack.
