Interpreting these fables is not a huge issue for me, even when Max Muller gets it wrong! I'm taking a deep dive into the Vocabulary, Grammar, etc absorbing and shoring things up as much as possible in preparatation, because this Reader gets progressively more difficult. Thankfully the Vedic material atthe end is also my favorite.
This particular fable with "Old Bull" the Vulture has obvious Buddhist origins, but there is also a certain comingeling of Brahmanic (Hindu) beliefs sprinkled throughout.
Just showed up as a recommendation: "Reconstucting the Roman Version of Mithrasism" Rome appropriated and modified all these beliefs- which have little to do or nothing with the originals.
